Six GM care services rated 'good' by CQC this week

All six Greater Manchester care services with inspection reports published this week have been rated 'good' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The round-up includes Cygnet Lodge Salford, which has made improvements since being given warning notices.

Cygnet Lodge, on Radcliffe Park Crescent, Salford, is now rated overall 'good'. Warning notices were served on the provider following a previous inspection in February 2025. The CQC inspection report published this week said 'we found that the service had made improvements and had met the requirements of the warning notices'.

Cygnet Lodge delivers assessment or medical treatment for women detained under the Mental Health Act. The service provides high dependency inpatient rehabilitation for 24 women with a primary diagnosis of mental illness. Inspectors said all rooms were single ensuite rooms and there were three apartments for patients to move into as part of their progression in the service. The apartments provided an opportunity for patients to develop and test out their independent living skills prior to discharge.

Bolton and Rochdale services rated 'good'

Knightswood Care Home, off Manchester Road in Blackrod, Bolton, was rated 'good' in every category by inspectors. The residential home provides accommodation and personal care for up to 27 people. At the time of the inspection, 23 people were living there.

The report said people told the CQC they had a positive experience of living at Knightswood and felt safe, comfortable and well cared for. One person said, 'of course I feel safe. Everyone looks after me well. I have a lock on the outside of my door'. A relative said: "The security is very good. They check on her through the night and the staff are always around to help. They make a point of being very friendly."

People consistently described staff as kind, patient and caring. One person told the CQC: "It is top class, it couldn't be better. I get lots of attention and the food is out of this world." A relative added: "I am very pleased with the home. I am more than happy that she is being well looked after."

Springvale Resource Centre in Middleton, Rochdale, was also rated 'good' this week. The care home provides accommodation and care and support for up to four people. The service supports people with sensory impairments or physical disabilities, including people with an acquired brain injury. The people living in the home were subject to restrictions which prevents them from accessing the community independently.

The CQC said 'people were supported by staff who had the skills and knowledge'. Staff were recruited safely and received training. Inspectors found an effective system in place to ensure all training was up to date for all staff and refresher training was booked in a timely manner. Accidents and incidents were documented and thoroughly reviewed to identify lessons learned. Appropriate actions were taken to reduce the risk of similar incidents occurring again.

Salford and Trafford services praised

The Poplars Medical Centre, on Partington Lane, Salford, was another service to be judged 'good'. The GP practice delivers services to 11,477 people in Salford. The report said staff kept facilities clean and maintained equipment appropriately to ensure people were kept safe. It added: "They assessed and managed the risk of infection well and took steps to control the risk of it spreading. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience." Inspectors spoke to people using the service at the time of the assessment with the report saying 'people were positive about the quality of their care and treatment'.

ERS Medical North is based at Severnside Trading Estate, Textilose Road, Trafford Park. It is an independent ambulance service providing non-emergency patient transport services to the public and private sector across the North of England. The CQC assessment looked at patient transport services to review whether the service was operating safely and whether governance arrangements provided sufficient assurance of quality and compliance. The service was rated good in all categories by inspectors.

Wigan surgery rated 'good'

Ince Surgery at Clare House, Phoenix Way, Wigan, was rated 'good' by the CQC. The GP practice delivers services to approximately 8,238 people in Wigan. The report said staff kept facilities clean and maintained equipment appropriately to ensure people were kept safe. The CQC said they assessed and managed the risk of infection well and took steps to control the risk of it spreading. There were enough staff with the right skills, qualifications and experience.

Staff at Ince Surgery supported people to live healthier lives, monitoring their care and treatment to ensure they received positive and consistent outcomes. Staff treated people with kindness, empathy and compassion, and respected their privacy and dignity. Inspectors said people could access care, treatment and support when they needed it. The CQC said leaders and staff were 'alert to discrimination and inequality that could disadvantage groups of people who used the service and sought ways to address any barriers'.
