Martin Lewis warns Halifax customers to act before Friday

Money Saving Expert Martin Lewis has issued a warning to Halifax bank customers, urging them to act before Friday. Halifax has been owned by Lloyds Banking Group since 2009 but has maintained a separate brand name and bank accounts since the takeover. In July, Halifax announced it would change its name to Lloyds and remove all Halifax branding, giving customers several months to transition to the Lloyds app. The deadline to move to the Lloyds brand is now almost upon us.

Deadline for Halifax app closure

Those who fail to move from the Halifax app to the Lloyds app in time will no longer be able to access their online banking services unless they re-register. Speaking on the latest episode of The Martin Lewis Money Show Live on Tuesday, October 20, on ITV1 and ITVX, Martin issued a warning.

He said: "Halifax customers, a warning to you. The brand is being merged into Lloyds on October 31. It means they’re closing down the app. So log in to the app now before then."

"And it will just be a simple button, producer Jamie tells me, she’s done it, that moves you across to the new Lloyds app. After that you have to register and it’s more hassle so you wanna do that now."

What the change means for customers

Martin added: "Products stay the same though there’ll be a gradual rebranding. Savings safety protection is unchanged. Actually Lloyds and Halifax have separate savings safety, that will continue for the time being."

In a message posted on Facebook in the summer, Halifax said: "The Halifax brand is changing to Lloyds. If you are a Halifax customer there is nothing to do right now, we'll keep you updated along the way." It warned: "Please remember as part of this change, we will never ask customers to share their personal details or move money by e-mail, phone or text."

On its website, Halifax outlined what the change means for customers, with the move expected to happen over 'the next few months'. It said: "There’s no change to your account features and benefits today. Over time, the brand of your Halifax accounts will change to Lloyds. If you have different Halifax accounts, updates may happen at different times, and we’ll always let you know before anything changes."

How to move to the Lloyds app

Halifax added: "As we’re part of the same family, you can already manage your money using the Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland apps, online banking and branches. If you use the Halifax app and online banking – we’ll invite you to move across to Lloyds."

"Over the next few months, we’ll be in touch to move you to the Lloyds app and online banking as we’ll be closing these for Halifax. They work in a similar way so should feel familiar and just as easy to use. We’ll send you an invitation in the app and online banking, so you’ll know it’s from us. It’ll guide you through the process in just a few easy steps, with no passwords or memorable details to set up. We’ll also email you around the time the invite will appear, so you don’t miss it."

The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, October 20, 2026 episode is still available to watch via ITVX.
