Should Brits Worry About US Explosive Diarrhoea Bug?

Nearly 7,000 Americans have been infected with a parasite causing watery and explosive diarrhoea, with 94 hospitalisations across 34 states since May 13. The outbreak, traced to contaminated food and water, has prompted Taco Bell to remove lettuce from menus in five states after the CDC linked 1,645 cases to the chain. But should Brits be worried?

What Is Cyclosporiasis?

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a microscopic parasite that infects the small intestine, causing cyclosporiasis. Prescribing pharmacist Karen Hutchinson explains that it is commonly found in Central and South America, southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Infection occurs through contaminated water or improperly washed food. Symptoms typically appear about a week after exposure, making it hard to trace the source.

Symptoms to Watch For

Dr Dominic Greenyer, private GP and Director at The Health Suite, says the hallmark symptom is prolonged watery diarrhoea lasting days or even weeks. Other symptoms include stomach cramps, bloating, nausea, loss of appetite, fatigue, weight loss, and low-grade fever. A key feature is that symptoms often come and go, with patients feeling better for days before diarrhoea returns.

UK Risk Assessment

Karen Hutchinson says the US outbreak is not a major concern for the UK, as cyclospora is not typically spread person-to-person. However, those who have recently travelled to outbreak areas, eat raw produce, or suspect contaminated water may face higher risk. Dr Greenyer urges against panic: “I wouldn’t want people to stop eating fruit and vegetables. The overall risk to the average person in the UK remains low.” He advises seeking medical advice if persistent diarrhoea occurs after foreign travel.

Treatment and Prevention

Most cases can be treated with antibiotics prescribed by a GP. For mild symptoms, staying hydrated is key. Severe cases with blood, dehydration signs, or underlying conditions require prompt medical attention. Preventative measures include thoroughly washing fruit and vegetables, especially if eaten raw, and avoiding preparing food for others while ill. Travellers to high-risk countries should take extra care with food and water.
