NHS Lanarkshire has announced a new summer programme offering the Meningococcal B (MenB) vaccine to young people following recent meningitis outbreaks in the UK. The time-limited initiative targets older teenagers and new college and university students considered at higher risk of exposure to meningococcal group B bacteria.
Eligibility Criteria
The MenB vaccine is available to three specific groups. First, young people born between March 1, 2008, and February 28, 2009, as well as any others who were in S6 during the 2025-26 academic year, regardless of their future education plans. Second, undergraduate university entrants under 25 who are starting for the first time in the 2026-27 academic year, including international students. Third, college entrants under 25 starting for the first time in the 2026-27 academic year while living away from home in shared student accommodation, including international students.
Vaccination Schedule
The programme begins this month, and two doses are essential for full protection. Although many young people have already received the separate MenACWY vaccine, they may still be at risk of meningitis and sepsis caused by other meningococcal bacteria, including group B. The MenB vaccine provides increased protection against meningococcal disease.
