The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed a measles death in an adult with an underlying immunological problem, as cases continue to surge across England. This marks the third measles-related death in 2026, following two child fatalities announced in June.
Case Numbers and Regional Spread
Figures released by the UKHSA show 883 confirmed measles cases in England from January 1 to July 6, 2026. In comparison, 959 cases were reported for the entire year of 2025. All regions of England have reported cases, with 52% in London, 17% in the West Midlands, and 10% in the North West. The majority of cases are in children aged 10 and under.
Vaccination Campaign
NHS leaders have launched a catch-up campaign targeting parents of children aged two to 11 who missed the MMR vaccine, which now also protects against chickenpox (MMR/V vaccine). Health officials aim to contact approximately one million families of children who missed one or both doses. For the first three months of 2026, 84.1% of five-year-olds had received both doses of the MMR vaccine. GPs will contact parents of children under six, while those aged six to 11 will be contacted via the NHS app, text, email, or letter.
WHO Elimination Status
Earlier in 2026, the World Health Organisation declared that the UK is no longer considered to have eliminated measles, following a plateau in vaccination coverage and a surge in cases. The UKHSA continues to monitor the situation and urge vaccination to prevent further spread.
