Martin Lewis, the Money Saving Expert, has issued a summer 2026 warning for anyone travelling to Europe: get a free UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) before you go. Speaking at the National Money Assembly held at St Charles 6th Form College in London, Lewis emphasised that the card is 'totally free' and can provide access to state healthcare in EU countries at the same cost as locals.
What is the GHIC and How Does It Save Money?
The GHIC entitles UK travellers to medically necessary healthcare in state-run hospitals across the European Union and certain other countries. If treatment is free for locals, it is free for GHIC holders. Lewis explained: 'This gives you treatment in a state-run hospital in a European Union country or equivalent at the same cost as a local – so if it's free for them, it's free for you.' The card also covers GP visits abroad where local people do not pay.
However, the NHS clarifies that the GHIC does not cover private medical treatment, mountain rescue, repatriation to the UK, or lost or stolen belongings. For these reasons, Lewis stressed that the GHIC should never replace travel insurance.
Never Pay for a GHIC – Apply Free on NHS Website
Lewis warned holidaymakers to avoid third-party websites that charge fees for GHIC applications. 'That's totally free, never pay for it,' he said. Applications are only free through the official NHS website, and most people can apply online. Anyone paying a fee is using an unnecessary service.
Why Travel Insurance is Essential
Lewis urged travellers to buy travel insurance 'ASAB' – as soon as you book. He noted that basic travel insurance for a young person spending a week in Europe can cost as little as £7 to £10. 'If you can afford the holiday, you can afford travel insurance,' he added. Policies taken out at booking protect against cancellation due to illness, injury, or other unforeseen events before departure.
In summary, the GHIC is a valuable free card for accessing state healthcare in Europe, but it must be complemented by comprehensive travel insurance. Lewis's key advice: apply for the GHIC via the official NHS site at no cost, and purchase travel insurance immediately upon booking a holiday.
