Health experts are warning Brits about a potential health issue that could flare up during a heatwave. While sunburn and heat stroke are common concerns, the hot temperatures can also negatively impact your ear health. With a heatwave forecast over the next few days, it's more important than ever to remain safe and protected.
Sunburn and Tinnitus
Kayleigh Waters, an audiologist at Boots Hearingcare, explains that sunburn can exacerbate tinnitus symptoms. Intense sun exposure leads to inflammation, which can worsen tinnitus. Additionally, sunburn causes physical stress and dehydration, both of which can heighten tinnitus symptoms. To avoid flare-ups, Kayleigh recommends wearing and reapplying SPF, avoiding prolonged direct sunlight, and covering with wide-brimmed hats and suitable clothing.
Dehydration and Ear Health
Dehydration is another problem that can impact your ears during high temperatures. The inner ear relies on fluid to support hearing and balance. When the body becomes dehydrated, it can disrupt this fluid balance, leading to symptoms such as ringing in the ears, dizziness, a feeling of fullness, and muffled hearing. The NHS advises drinking 6-8 glasses of fluid a day, but this should increase to 8-10 glasses during warmer periods to protect ear health.
Swimmer's Ear
During hot weather, many people visit swimming pools or the ocean. While ear wax is water repellent and water usually trickles out on its own, issues can arise when water gets trapped. This can lead to infections like swimmer's ear, which may cause pain, itching, redness, swelling, and even partial or total hearing loss. If you develop symptoms of swimmer's ear, speak to your doctor about treatment options.
