Heart Pump Gives Freeman Patient a Decade of Life
Heart Pump Gives Freeman Patient a Decade of Life

A Cumbrian man has credited the NHS team at Newcastle's Freeman Hospital with giving him a decade of extra life after fitting him with a 'lifesaving' heart pump. Stuart Hind, 61, underwent surgery in 2016 to receive a Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) and says the device has transformed his quality of life.

A Decade with the LVAD

Stuart, who was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy – a weakening of the heart muscle – 25 years ago after experiencing breathlessness, saw his symptoms worsen over time. Working for Network Rail at the time, his condition deteriorated to the point where he needed mechanical support. The LVAD was implanted in 2016, and it has now been in place for a full decade.

Stuart said: "It was a big adjustment at first, but it has been a lifesaver. I’ve had a good life with it over the last ten years." The pump has enabled him to return to his passion for walking in the Lake District, tackling the challenging 'Wainwright' fell walks.

Gratitude to the NHS Team

Stuart praised the Freeman Hospital team, saying: "The team are like an extended family. I have complete trust in them. They are experts in what they do and are always there when you need them. They’re only ever a phone call away."

Andy Woods, advanced heart failure nurse practitioner at the Freeman, highlighted the significance of Stuart's milestone: "Living with an LVAD for 10 years is an extraordinary achievement, and Stuart’s story shows just how life-changing mechanical circulatory support can be. The device has enabled him to live as independently and normally as possible while awaiting a heart transplant, allowing him to remain active and continue doing the things he enjoys."

International Mechanical Circulatory Support Day

The pair spoke on International Mechanical Circulatory Support day earlier this week. Andy added: "We want to celebrate patients like Stuart and recognise the dedication of the families and friends who support them. Their resilience and determination in overcoming challenges and adapting to living with an LVAD is truly inspiring."
