An expert is warning about two areas most people miss when applying sunscreen in hot weather: the eyelids and armpits. Despite common knowledge to protect the ears, neck, and head, these spots are often neglected, leading to painful burns.
Which Areas Are Commonly Missed?
According to experts at Which?, people who do not wear sunglasses need to apply sunscreen to their eyelids for protection. Additionally, armpits are frequently overlooked. The expert advised: "Armpits, make sure you apply [sunscreen] before deodorant and reapply if you're sweating. And don't forget the back of your hands."
Other often-forgotten areas include the lips, feet, behind the knees, heels, ankles, soles, and between the toes.
Sun Safety Tips for the UK
The NHS recommends avoiding direct sunlight between 11am and 3pm from March to October, when UV rays are strongest. They advise never letting yourself burn, covering up with clothing and sunglasses, using at least factor 30 sunscreen, and reapplying frequently. Extra care should be taken with babies and children, as their skin is more sensitive and repeated exposure can lead to skin cancer later in life.
What to Do If Sunburn Occurs
If you do get sunburned, the NHS suggests sponging sore skin with cool water or taking a cool bath or shower, then applying soothing aftersun cream or aloe vera. Painkillers like paracetamol or ibuprofen can help reduce inflammation. Seek medical help if you feel unwell or if the skin swells badly or blisters.
