Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has opened up about a deeply personal health scare that he kept hidden from his wife for days. The 54-year-old actor and former WWE star revealed that he discovered a painful lump on his testicle and, fearing it might be cancer, chose not to tell anyone—not even his spouse of seven years, Lauren Hashian.
A Weekend of Worry
In an interview with Esquire, Johnson described the internal turmoil he experienced over that weekend. ‘I didn’t even tell Lauren,’ he admitted. ‘I didn’t want to worry her before I knew if it was anything to even worry about.’ The couple, who have been together for over two decades and married since August 2019, share two daughters.
Despite a packed schedule promoting the upcoming Jumanji: Open World and the live-action Moana, Johnson’s mind was consumed by the lump. He spent the entire weekend spiralling internally but kept up a brave face for his family.
Medical Scare and Relief
First thing Monday morning, Johnson visited a doctor to get checked for testicular cancer. The GP suspected epididymitis—an inflammation of the tube at the back of the testicle that stores sperm—but recommended an ultrasound the following day. ‘So I had to live with that for those twenty-four hours, not knowing—and I had to be on all day, joking around, making speeches,’ he recalled.
Johnson spent that day alongside his Jumanji co-stars Jack Black, Karen Gillan, and Kevin Hart, smiling and pretending everything was fine. He reassured Esquire that he is now okay, adding: ‘But I didn’t know that then, and the thing was really painful.’
Previous Health Struggles
Last June, the Fast and Furious star shared how he had struggled with digestive tract issues ‘for years.’ While on The Mark Hyman Show, he said: ‘That was at the beginning of 2024, and I was just getting ready to launch into what would become a nine-month workload for me—nonstop work. And I was thinking, “How am I going to get through this with my gut issues? I’m not digesting properly.”‘
Run-In With the Law
Health problems aren’t Johnson’s only recent issue. He ended up paying a fine for driving with his windows too tinted. He was pulled over on his way home by the Los Angeles Police Department, still sporting his crisp white shirt and cream trousers. Pictures and video footage show Johnson chatting calmly to the officer, stepping out of his car to sign paperwork before heading on his way.
He had been at the Walk of Fame ceremony to deliver a speech for his friend and co-star Emily Blunt, 43. ‘Every single day, knowing Emily, as many of us do, that is one grateful woman who will wake up feet on the ground, being grateful about every moment,’ he joked, saying ‘it’s about time’ she received a Walk of Fame star.
