Consultant interventional radiologist Dr Mark Regi of VeinCentre has issued a health warning about symptoms in the legs that are often dismissed as ageing or everyday issues. He emphasizes that poor circulation rarely improves on its own and can lead to severe complications if untreated.
Varicose Veins and Their Risks
Dr Regi explained that varicose veins develop when valves inside veins stop working, causing blood to pool. Symptoms include prominent, twisted, or protruding veins. If left untreated, they can worsen, leading to skin changes, swelling, and leg ulcers. However, treatment is available, so patients need not endure the aching heaviness.
Hair Thinning and Circulation
Blood pooling in the legs can reduce hair follicles, causing thinning or hair loss on the legs. This change in hair condition may indicate underlying circulation issues.
Swelling as a Warning Sign
When circulation slows, fluid can accumulate in lower limbs, causing swelling and puffiness. Persistent swelling, especially with pain or discomfort, should be assessed by a professional.
Muscle Cramping and Blood Flow
Dr Regi noted that cramping during exercise or walking may signal muscles not receiving enough oxygen-rich blood. Aching, heaviness, and fatigue after prolonged sitting or standing can also indicate artery or vein issues, such as varicose veins.
He advises seeking professional help to determine the root cause of circulation problems. Early identification makes management easier, with lifestyle measures and possibly medical treatment for underlying vein conditions.
