Coronation Street has unveiled a harrowing new storyline for character Betsy Swain, played by Sydney Martin, who suffers a stroke after a non-fatal strangulation incident. The teen is rushed to hospital unconscious after being found by a worried Ryan on the ITV soap.
Diagnosis and Cause
In hospital, doctors confirm that Betsy has suffered a stroke caused by a blood clot, resulting from neck artery damage due to temporary loss of circulation. She subsequently suffers a second stroke and eventually reveals what happened. Betsy explains that her partner Dylan (Liam McCheyne) strangled her during consensual sex, leading to a life-changing diagnosis that will have profound physical and emotional impacts.
Collaboration with Experts
The storyline was developed in consultation with the Institute for Addressing Strangulation (IFAS), the Stroke Association, and Safeline. A study by IFAS found that over 55% of young adults have either been strangled or strangled someone else during sex. Kate Brooks, Producer of Coronation Street, stated: "Coronation Street has always pushed boundaries when it comes to telling challenging, thought-provoking stories... Shining a light on the dangers of this all too common trend, we wanted to chart Betsy and Dylan's story as they navigate the catastrophic implications of a moment of naivety."
Expert Comments
Professor Cath White, Medical Director at IFAS, said: "We are grateful to Coronation Street for approaching this storyline with such care and a commitment to medical accuracy. Non-fatal strangulation can result in life-changing injuries, including stroke, even where there are no visible external signs. There is no safe way to strangle." Juliet Bouverie OBE, CEO at the Stroke Association, added: "While the cause of Betsy’s stroke is rare, her experience powerfully shows that a stroke can happen at any age, and its impact can be devastating."
Impact and Awareness
The storyline aims to raise awareness of the risks associated with strangulation during sex, challenging misconceptions and encouraging those affected to seek support. Betsy's journey will depict the long-term consequences of her stroke, including her struggle to cope with her new reality.
