Eight-Year-Old with Ultra Rare Condition Dies After Brave Battle
Boy, 8, Dies After Brave Battle with Rare Condition

Luca Toland-Ogg, an eight-year-old boy from Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, died on Thursday, July 8, after a six-year battle with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome, an ultra rare condition affecting approximately 1 in 380,000 people. Described by his family as 'bright and bubbly,' Luca passed away in hospital, three days after being readmitted on Saturday, July 5.

Diagnosis and Symptoms

Luca was diagnosed with Lesch-Nyhan syndrome at age two. The disorder caused high muscle tone, developmental delay, elevated uric acid levels affecting his kidneys, and self-injurious behaviors. He spent much of his life in and out of hospital, cared for by his mother Maddi and father William.

Final Weeks

In March, Luca was hospitalized for a hip operation. His recovery was 'extremely complex,' keeping his family in hospital for two months due to painful, life-altering injuries. He was discharged to his space-themed bedroom but was found to have two broken legs less than a week later. He returned home and enjoyed trips to the duck pond before being rushed back to hospital on July 5.

Family Tribute

His family said: 'Luca Toland-Ogg, or Luca Boy to most, was a beloved son of Maddi and William, best brother to Rosie and loved by everyone who knew him. Luca lived for eight incredible years, and the memories of his life will last a lifetime. He loved so much about life, chocolate buttons, Tractor Ted, Mr Tumble and most of all - adventures with his family.' They added: 'There was nothing Maddi and William wouldn't do for Luca; they are the very definition of amazing parents.'

Financial Hardship and Fundraiser

The family relied on disability, carers, and motability benefits to care for Luca, which they will lose following his death. A GoFundMe page set up by relatives states: 'The extreme complications of his disability meant that Maddi would be his full-time carer and, especially in his later years, William was only able to commit to very part-time hours as Lucas' needs became more complex.' The fundraiser aims to cover memorial costs, a replacement car, and living expenses. The family spent what was described as their last camping trip together before his death.
