Jenny Slatten, a familiar face from the reality series 90 Day Fiancé, has publicly disclosed that she was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) in December of last year. The 68-year-old reality star first experienced symptoms in 2024, but it took a full year before the diagnosis was confirmed.
Statement from Jenny Slatten
In an emotional Instagram post, Slatten addressed rumors about her health. “There was a rumor that I had a stroke, but it turned out to be ALS,” she wrote. “At first, we tried to keep it private because it’s been very emotional and overwhelming for us. We were hoping to find some kind of solution before speaking publicly. But after trying for some time, we feel like it’s time to reach out.”
She expressed gratitude for the support and opened up about seeking help: “Right now, we are open to any kind of help — treatments, clinical trials, lifestyle changes, or anything that could help treat this disease or slow down its progression.”
Early Symptoms and Diagnosis
Slatten and her husband, Sumit Singh, 38, spoke with People magazine about the progression of her illness. The first sign appeared in December 2024 when she choked “badly” while drinking water. Subsequently, she experienced difficulty swallowing and was initially treated for a suspected infection. However, her speech began to deteriorate, leading her to avoid conversations. “That's when we knew something was wrong,” Slatten recalled.
In December 2025, during a 90 Day Fiancé holiday party in New York City, Singh noticed her speech had become markedly slower. Fans on social media also expressed concern, with some speculating about ALS. “And then I find out that these symptoms she was having — this is what it looks like,” Singh said.
According to the U.S. National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, early ALS symptoms include muscle twitches in the arms, legs, shoulders, or tongue; cramps; muscle stiffness; weakness; slurred speech; and difficulty chewing or swallowing.
Family History and Treatment
Slatten’s father died from ALS a decade ago. She and Singh consulted several neurologists in India, where she received the diagnosis. Singh noted that the disease’s progression is “slow,” and the couple is actively exploring treatment options.
Slatten's Reality TV Journey
Slatten entered the reality TV spotlight in 2019 on the first season of 90 Day Fiancé: The Other Way, which documented her move to India to be with Singh. The couple married in 2021 and are set to appear in the upcoming season of the spin-off 90 Day: The Last Resort.
Other Celebrities with ALS
Slatten joins a growing list of TV personalities who have shared their ALS diagnoses. Recently, actor Russell Andrews, known for roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Better Call Saul, revealed his own ALS diagnosis. He initially mistook his symptoms for a stroke during the pandemic. Additionally, Grey’s Anatomy star Eric Dane announced his ALS diagnosis in April 2025 and passed away in February of this year.
