Thai Princess's Health Deteriorates After Three-Year Coma

The health of Thailand's Princess Bajrakitiyabha has significantly deteriorated, with medical professionals encountering difficulties in stabilizing her irregular heart rhythm amid multiple organ infections, the Royal Palace confirmed on Thursday.

Princess's Condition Worsens

The 47-year-old princess, who is King Maha Vajiralongkorn's eldest daughter, has remained in a coma since December 2022 after collapsing due to a heart condition and subsequent infections that led to her hospitalization. According to local media reports at the time, she collapsed on 15 December while training her dogs in the Pak Chong district of Nakhon Ratchasima province.

A statement from the palace revealed that physicians identified a stomach infection in April, which subsequently triggered inflammation in her intestines. This complication caused a dangerous drop in her blood pressure and further aggravated her irregular heartbeat. Despite the administration of medications and the use of medical devices to support her lung and kidney functions, her condition has continued to decline.

Medical Response and Family Background

Palace officials confirmed that medical staff will maintain close monitoring and continue providing treatment. This update follows the death of Thailand's influential Queen Mother last year, who passed away at the age of 93.

Princess Bajrakitiyabha holds a PhD in law from Cornell University and served as Thailand's ambassador to Austria from 2012 to 2014. She has collaborated on numerous projects with the United Nations and was appointed as a representative of Thailand for UN Women in September 2008. In 2021, she was appointed chief of staff of the Royal Security Command, holding the rank of general. She was widely regarded as the most suitable successor to her father, King Vajiralongkorn.
