A new COVID-19 variant, nicknamed 'Stratis', is fuelling a fresh wave of infections across the UK, prompting urgent warnings from health officials and scientists.
The FLiRT variant, known scientifically as KP.2, is now the dominant strain in the country and is behind a significant spike in cases, particularly among vulnerable groups.
Who is Most at Risk?
Experts are sounding the alarm for older adults and those with underlying health conditions. Professor Stephen Griffin, a renowned virologist from the University of Leeds, emphasised the seriousness of the situation for these demographics.
"The combination of COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses can be particularly dangerous for older age groups and those with certain health conditions," he stated.
The Tell-Tale Signs: Key Symptoms to Watch For
While the classic symptoms like a loss of taste or smell are now less common, the Stratis variant presents with a familiar set of signs. The most frequently reported symptoms include:
- Sore throat
- Runny nose
- Coughing
- Headache
- Fatigue
- Muscle aches
- Fever
- Chills
- Nausea
This shift in symptoms means many people may mistake a COVID infection for a common summer cold or hay fever.
A Summer Wave of Sickness
This surge is particularly concerning as it arrives at the start of the summer season. The rise in cases is being closely monitored, with hospitalisations beginning to creep upwards, putting additional pressure on the NHS during a typically quieter period.
The public is being urged to remain vigilant, take sensible precautions, and ensure their vaccinations are up to date to protect themselves and the healthcare system from this latest wave.
