Three British nationals have been diagnosed with suspected Hantavirus following an outbreak aboard the MV Hondius cruise ship, currently docked at the remote Atlantic island of Tristan da Cunha. Two of the cases have been medically evacuated, while the third patient remains on board.
Outbreak Details
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has reported eight cases so far, with three fatalities. Five of these cases have been confirmed as Hantavirus. Despite the severity, the WHO states that the risk to the general public remains very low.
Symptoms to Watch For
Experts urge people to familiarise themselves with Hantavirus symptoms. Declan Lismore, Superintendent Pharmacist at Chemist4U, warned: "Hantavirus can be serious to those exposed. You should be aware of the symptoms and how to take preventative action."
Early symptoms include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Nausea or abdominal pain
The illness can worsen, leading to Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome, causing persistent cough and breathing difficulties.
Transmission and Prevention
Hantavirus is typically contracted by inhaling particles contaminated with rodent urine, faeces, or saliva. However, the rare strain linked to recent cases can spread between people in close contact. Lismore added: "While the risk remains low, human-to-human transmission means you should be aware of symptoms."
He concluded: "It is crucial to seek medical assistance quickly if you experience symptoms or come into contact with someone who tests positive."
