Thiago Alcantara has sung the praises of former Liverpool winger Luis Diaz following his move to Bayern Munich. The Colombian has been outstanding for the Bundesliga giants since completing his switch from Anfield last summer.
Diaz's Rise at Bayern
The 29-year-old spent three-and-a-half years with the Reds, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and two League Cups. Diaz was a key figure in Arne Slot's title-winning side in 2025, but Liverpool have been forced to watch on as he takes his displays to another level in Munich. Given his prolific form, Liverpool may question whether selling Diaz was the right call.
Thiago's Endorsement
One of the winger's former teammates, Thiago, has weighed in on the forward's season so far and backed Bayern's decision to snap up Diaz. "They're having a spectacular season. I think they made the right call signing Luis," Thiago told Sky Sport Deutschland. "I know him from Liverpool. He's a fantastic player and person. And Vinnie [Kompany] is doing a great job as coach. The team is fantastic, with a very good mix of experienced and young players. It's a pleasure to watch them play."
Statistical Leap
Diaz has scored 26 goals and chipped in with 21 assists in 48 appearances for Bayern so far this season. This represents a considerable step up from his 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 outings for Liverpool, hinting that he may be hitting the peak of his powers. The remarks from Thiago, who is Barcelona's assistant manager, shed light on the lasting impression the Colombian made during their time as teammates. The duo played together from January 2022 until the summer of 2024, when Thiago departed Anfield and subsequently hung up his boots.
Liverpool's Perspective
In February, reflecting on the choice to offload the Bayern star, Liverpool manager Slot said: "Luis Diaz is another example of how this club is run. If this club gets an offer like that for a 28-year-old, then this club, because it is built on sustainability, chooses to sell a player, and we are an exception in the Premier League, especially at the top of the Premier League, for that. That is why it is also so nice that we can achieve the things we have achieved in the last few years with that model. He is doing very well at Bayern, and that is not a surprise to me."
Future Moves
Liverpool are expected to be on the hunt for wide players this summer. Mohamed Salah is poised to depart at the end of the campaign, while Slot may also look to strengthen his options down the left side. Meanwhile, Bayern have already wrapped up the Bundesliga title this season, securing the championship with matches to spare. Vincent Kompany's men are also set to take on Stuttgart for the DFB-Pokal trophy but fell short of a place in the Champions League final after being knocked out at the semi-final stage by Paris Saint-Germain.
