Actor James Van Der Beek, famed for his role in Dawson's Creek, is receiving an outpouring of support from his wife, Kimberly, as he continues his battle against cancer. The 48-year-old star is raising funds for his treatment by selling autographed memorabilia from his iconic roles, a move his wife has proudly celebrated.
‘You’re a wizard’: A Wife’s Public Support
In a touching show of solidarity, Kimberly Van Der Beek, 43, publicly praised her husband's resilience. Her comments came after James shared a video on Instagram showcasing a jersey from his 1999 film, Varsity Blues. In the clip, he is seen tossing a football and spinning it on his finger, wearing the white jersey bearing his character's name, Moxon.
"You're a wizard," Kimberly wrote in the comments section of the post. "Bouncing back baby!!" This public declaration of support highlights the couple's close bond as they navigate his health challenges together.
Fundraising Through Film Memorabilia
The Instagram video was more than just a nostalgic throwback; it was a launch for a new fundraising initiative. James Van Der Beek is now selling merchandise, including the very jersey he wore in the video, to help cover the costs of his stage three colorectal cancer treatment.
In his post, the actor explained his personal connection to the 'varsity whites' and expressed deep gratitude for the support he received last year when he first released merchandise. "Proceeds go directly toward helping with treatment and supporting families walking the same path," he confirmed, emphasising that the campaign also aims to assist other cancer patients and their families.
The items are available for purchase on his website, with non-autographed jerseys priced at $40 and signed versions costing $80.
A Private Battle Made Public
James Van Der Beek first revealed his stage three colorectal cancer diagnosis last year, confirming he had been "privately dealing with this diagnosis." The disease begins in the colon or rectum.
The emotional toll of his illness was evident when, in a televised interview a month after his announcement, he fought back tears while speaking about his wife's unwavering support. "I'm someone who always in the past tried to do everything for everybody and never asked for help myself, and this has put me in a position of having to ask for help and having to receive help," he shared.
The father of six, who married Kimberly in 2010, was recently forced to miss a Dawson's Creek cast reunion due to his health. He made a virtual appearance at the fundraising event, which was organised by his former co-star Michelle Williams to support him.
