White socks rarely stay pristine for long, but there is a way to revive them, according to cleaning expert Lynsey Crombie, also known as the Queen of Clean.
Why White Socks Turn Yellow or Grey
White socks can become discoloured due to sweat, body oils, dirt, and residue from laundry detergent. Washing them with coloured garments or using the wrong method can also leave them looking dull.
The Solution: Baking Soda and Liquid Detergent
According to Lynsey Crombie, the key to restoring brightness is using baking soda alongside liquid detergent. Baking soda neutralises odours, lifts stains, and brightens fabric.
Lynsey shared her sock-whitening hack on Instagram (@lynsey_queenofclean), and it does not require a washing machine. She recommends hand washing with a capful of liquid detergent, a scoop of bicarbonate of soda (baking soda), and a good rub on an old-fashioned washboard.
The cleaning expert emphasised that the washboard makes a significant difference in lifting stains. Washboards are simple devices with a wooden frame and a metal ridged surface that helps loosen dirt.
Step-by-Step Method
- Fill a wash bucket with water.
- Add one capful of liquid laundry detergent and one scoop of baking soda.
- Place the dirty socks in the bucket.
- Using a small washboard, scrub each sock individually to remove built-up stains.
- Rinse the socks thoroughly.
After rinsing, the socks appear cleaner and whiter. Lynsey recommends letting sunlight work its magic to keep them bright white, as sunlight acts as a natural bleach and helps remove light discolouration.
This simple, cost-effective method can restore your white socks to their original brightness without harsh chemicals or machine washing.
