Queen Camilla keeps her breakfast simple, opting for porridge with a spoonful of homemade honey, a dish praised by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) for its heart-healthy benefits due to high fibre content.
Royal Breakfast Routine Revealed
Tom Parker Bowles, Queen Camilla's son, shared in his 2024 book 'Cooking & The Crown' that his mother eats porridge every day in winter. He wrote: "In winter, my mother, Queen Camilla, eats porridge every day - plain, aside from a little of her own honey. The hives sit at the back of a field at Raymill, the house in which my sister and I spent the latter part of our youth." He described the honey as "delicate and mild," suitable for tea, porridge, or yoghurt.
Heart Health Benefits
The BHF ranks porridge as the most heart-friendly breakfast option, above granola, cornflakes, muesli, and bran flakes, due to its beta-glucan content. Soluble fibre like beta-glucan can lower cholesterol levels when at least 3g is consumed daily as part of a balanced diet. However, the BHF advises using water or low-fat milk instead of full-fat milk and salt, and adding fruit like bananas for natural sweetness. BHF experts said: "As well as beta-glucan, you’ll be getting the fibre from the whole grains, plus there is no added sugar or salt. Instead of adding sugar or salt to your porridge for flavour – instead, try adding a banana or other fruits for extra sweetness."
Honey and Cardiovascular Health
A 2020 study suggested honey could be a "potential candidate to be explored further as a natural and dietary alternative to the management of cardiovascular disease." Scientists found evidence that honey acts as a 'cardioprotective agent', reducing damage in heart problems, though more research is needed.
Tom's book 'Cooking and The Crown' celebrates over a century of Royal dining, from Queen Victoria to King Charles III, featuring both extravagant and simple dishes.
