Easy Vinegar Wash Keeps Strawberries Fresh Up to 2 Weeks

Strawberries are among the most beloved summer fruits, but their tendency to turn soft and mouldy within days is a common frustration. Now, a food expert has revealed a simple kitchen trick that can keep strawberries fresh for up to two weeks, requiring only a few minutes of effort.

The Vinegar Bath Method

Food writer and cookery teacher Sheri Castle, who specialises in farm-to-table ingredients, recommends giving strawberries a quick vinegar wash before storage. This 'vinegar bath' eliminates bacteria and mould spores that cause rapid spoilage.

To try it, mix one part standard kitchen vinegar with three parts water. Submerge the strawberries with their green tops still on for about ten minutes. Then drain and rinse thoroughly under cold running water.

Drying Is Crucial

The next step is equally important: drying the berries completely. Any leftover moisture can accelerate spoilage. Sheri suggests using a salad spinner lined with kitchen paper to gently remove excess water until the strawberries are fully dry.

Storage Tips

Once dry, transfer the strawberries to a clean, sealable container lined with kitchen paper. Instead of sealing it tightly, leave the lid slightly ajar to prevent moisture buildup. Store the container in the fridge to keep the fruit fresh for much longer.

Foodies praise the technique as straightforward yet remarkably effective, with many surprised at how such a simple step can significantly prolong shelf life. Sheri notes that while it takes only a few extra minutes, it is 'absolutely worth it' to avoid wasting perfectly good fruit.
