Peter Murrell, the former chief executive of the Scottish National Party (SNP), has admitted to embezzling over £400,000 from the party. Murrell, who is Nicola Sturgeon’s estranged husband, pleaded guilty to the charges at the High Court in Edinburgh on Monday morning.
Details of the Embezzlement
The embezzlement of £400,310.65 occurred between August 2010 and October 2022. Allegations included in the indictment state that Murrell used £124,550 of party funds in 2020 to purchase a motorhome for his personal use. He was initially arrested in April 2023 as part of a police investigation into the SNP's finances, and subsequently charged in April 2024.
Impact on the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon
The case has sent shockwaves through the Scottish political landscape. Nicola Sturgeon, who announced the end of her marriage to Murrell earlier this year, has not commented publicly on the guilty plea. The SNP has stated that it is cooperating fully with the authorities and has implemented new financial controls to prevent such incidents in the future.
Murrell remains in custody pending sentencing. The court has ordered a full investigation into his assets to determine the extent of the misappropriated funds and to ensure restitution to the party.
