Authentic Bahraini Recipes to Try at Home

Bring the vibrant tastes of Bahrain to your kitchen with these two beloved recipes: stuffed vine leaves and chicken machbous. These dishes showcase the rich culinary heritage of the Middle East, combining aromatic spices, tender meats, and fresh ingredients for an unforgettable dining experience.

Stuffed Vine Leaves (Warak Enab)

A staple in Bahraini households, stuffed vine leaves are a labour of love that rewards patience with incredible flavour. Here's how to make them:

  • Ingredients: Vine leaves, minced lamb or beef, rice, onions, tomatoes, garlic, parsley, mint, lemon juice, olive oil, and a blend of spices including cinnamon, allspice, and black pepper.
  • Method: Blanch the vine leaves to soften them. Mix the filling ingredients, then carefully wrap small portions in the leaves. Layer them in a pot, add water and lemon juice, and simmer until tender.

Chicken Machbous

Considered Bahrain's national dish, chicken machbous is a fragrant one-pot wonder:

  1. Marinate the chicken with baharat spice mix, garlic, ginger, and lime juice for at least two hours.
  2. Brown the chicken before adding onions, tomatoes, and dried lime (loomi).
  3. Add rice and stock, then simmer until the rice is fluffy and infused with all the wonderful flavours.

Serve these dishes with fresh salads, yoghurt, and flatbreads for an authentic Bahraini meal that will transport your taste buds to the Arabian Gulf.
