Window Cleaner's Life-Changing Weight Loss Journey After Terrifying Sleep Struggles
Window Cleaner Loses 17 Stone After Sleep Fears

A window cleaner from Bury St Edmunds has undergone a remarkable transformation after losing 17 stone, a journey sparked by terrifying sleep disturbances that left him fearing for his life. Graham Baalham, 55, says he now feels "20 years old again" following his dramatic weight loss, which has restored his health and vitality.

From Nighttime Terror to Renewed Energy

Graham Baalham, standing at 5ft 4, was once too terrified to sleep, weighing nearly 29 stone. He experienced severe breathing issues, jolting awake up to seven times a night, gasping for air as his windpipe seemed to close up. This led him to hang his head out of the bedroom window or sleep upright in a chair for hours, a cycle that left him exhausted and reliant on comfort eating.

A Vicious Cycle of Exhaustion and Overeating

His wife, Belinda, suspected sleep apnoea, describing it as if his windpipe was closing up. Graham recalls, "Sleep was the worst part. It was terrifying. I’d wake up six or seven times a night not breathing, gasping for air." The exhaustion from these episodes caused him to eat for comfort, worsening his weight gain. Once, he even smacked his face on a digger at work due to fatigue, yet avoided medical help for years, knowing doctors would advise weight loss.

The Turning Point and Weight Loss Success

The real catalyst came during a hospital stay for a serious leg infection, where doctors warned of potential amputation if antibiotics failed. This scare prompted Graham to join Slimming World, where he learned proper eating habits. He went from 28st 12lbs to 11st 13lbs, ditching unhealthy snacks like crisps and chocolate bars, and now walks up to ten miles daily with his dog.

Transformed Lifestyle and Family Inspiration

Graham emphasizes that Slimming World taught him how to eat properly, replacing his old diet of sugar-loaded coffee, white bread sandwiches, and fizzy drinks with nutritious meals like overnight oats and wholemeal sandwiches. He sleeps through the night now, free from gasping for air, and feels rested upon waking. Married for 35 years with three children and three grandsons, he says, "I realised I didn’t just want to lose weight. I wanted to be here for them."

Local Impact and Consultant Praise

Shani Yates, his Slimming World consultant, praises Graham's determination, calling him a "local legend" who has inspired others in the group. She notes, "Seeing him lose an incredible 17st and finally enjoy a full night’s sleep after struggling for so long makes me so proud." Graham's journey, shared on Facebook, has motivated others locally to join, highlighting the power of community support in health transformations.

At 55, Graham views this as a second chance at life, stating, "I’m not just lighter – I’m alive, awake and present." He aims to watch his grandchildren grow up, embracing a future filled with energy and wellness.
