Max George Describes Heart Condition as 'A Blessing' Following Urgent Surgery

The Wanted star Max George has opened up about his serious heart condition, describing the experience as "a blessing in ways" despite the initial shock of diagnosis and emergency surgery. The 37-year-old singer was hospitalised in December 2024 after doctors discovered a 2:1 block on his heart, requiring immediate medical intervention.

Emergency Pacemaker Fitting and Recovery Journey

George's heart rate had dropped dangerously low to approximately 24 beats per minute and showed no signs of improvement, necessitating urgent surgical treatment. Within days of his hospital admission, medical professionals fitted him with a pacemaker to regulate his heartbeat. The Manchester-born performer candidly described the experience as "mad" and "a shock more than anything," recalling how he could hardly breathe with his arms, chest, and face turning blue before treatment.

"I couldn't physically feel anything that was going on, but I was aware of it," George revealed. "There were times where it kind of felt like torture a little bit." His heart remained at the critically low rate for about eight days while he awaited the operation in hospital.

Transforming Personal Struggle into Public Advocacy

Since his recovery, George has returned to performing with his duo The Wanted 2.0 and has become an active supporter of cardiovascular health awareness. He has joined a significant new campaign by the British Heart Foundation (BHF) aimed at increasing public understanding about individuals living with heart conditions.

The singer first began sharing details of his heart problems publicly during his hospital stay nearly two years ago, initially documenting his journey on Instagram out of "boredom." However, these personal revelations evolved into something much more meaningful as he connected with others facing similar challenges.

"To interact with people was just something nice to do," George explained. "But the more I spoke to people, the more I realised that there was a lot of people my age and younger that have had this happen to them."

Championing Awareness for Younger Heart Patients

George's experience has fundamentally shifted his perspective on cardiovascular health, particularly regarding age-related assumptions about heart conditions. "It kind of triggered a thought process that it was important to get the word out there – that heart problems don't just happen to people over 75," he emphasized.

The singer has found particular reward in speaking with younger individuals about their experiences, helping them feel more comfortable with their own medical situations. "If I can help them with their story or help bring more money towards treatment for heart conditions, then I'm all for it," George stated.

British Heart Foundation Campaign Involvement

As part of the BHF initiative, George will participate in conversations with other heart condition patients, exchanging stories about their experiences. The charity is marking its 65th anniversary by installing 65 red benches across the United Kingdom, each dedicated to a cardiovascular disease survivor with their name and a personal message about what they enjoy in life.

"I'm genuinely buzzing to be part of the campaign," George expressed enthusiastically. "This is an awesome campaign to be supporting, and we'll just see where it goes. It feels really cool to be a part of it."

Career Background and Personal Life

George rose to fame in the 2010s as a member of The Wanted alongside bandmates Siva Kaneswaran, Jay McGuiness, Nathan Sykes, and the late Tom Parker, who passed away in 2022 at age 33 after being diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. The group achieved significant success with two UK number one singles and four UK top 10 albums, including hits like "All Time Low," "Glad You Came," and "Chasing The Sun."

Beyond his music career, George appeared in the American musical series Glee and competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2020, where he met former EastEnders star Maisie Smith, who is now his girlfriend. His diverse career experiences have given him a broad platform from which to advocate for heart health awareness.

Reflecting on his entire journey from diagnosis to advocacy, George concluded: "In terms of that, this whole thing has been a blessing in ways, because it's been really rewarding speaking to people, especially people that are younger than me, and helping them feel a little bit better about their case."
