Government Accused of 'Playing Russian Roulette' with Meningitis B Vaccine
Campaigners have launched a scathing attack on the government, accusing it of "playing Russian roulette" by failing to offer the meningitis B vaccine to all young people. This comes amid an "explosive" outbreak in Kent that has resulted in 20 confirmed cases and two tragic deaths, sparking urgent demands for a broader vaccination programme.
Outbreak Sparks Urgent Calls for Action
The outbreak has particularly affected young adults, with the University of Kent taking proactive measures by offering vaccines to 5,000 students in halls of residence. Simultaneously, pharmacies across the county have reported a significant surge in demand for private vaccine supplies, highlighting growing public concern. Marrissa Mullans, whose 18-year-old son Alfie died from Meningitis B in 2023, is at the forefront of the campaign, advocating for the MenB vaccine to be made available to all young people, not just those born after 2015.
Government Response and Health Warnings
In response to the crisis, Health Secretary Wes Streeting has requested the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) to re-examine eligibility criteria for meningitis vaccines. However, he emphasized that he would not have a "knee-jerk reaction" to a wider rollout, stressing the need for evidence-based decision-making. Meanwhile, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued stark warnings to NHS staff, noting the "severe with rapid deterioration" nature of the illness and advising a high index of suspicion for symptoms in individuals aged 16 to 30.
Campaigners' Demands and Public Health Implications
Campaigners argue that the current policy leaves many young people vulnerable, with the Kent chief medical officer insisting the vaccine is "highly effective" as the rollout begins in targeted areas. The situation underscores broader public health challenges, as families and communities grapple with the risks of meningitis B. The ongoing debate highlights the tension between immediate action and careful policy evaluation in managing infectious disease outbreaks.
