A dedicated teacher and track coach, battling both prostate cancer and an aggressive form of skin cancer, faced a devastating blow when his vehicle was stolen while he was receiving overnight treatment at a Kansas City hospital. Bruce Bingham, who resides in Hutchinson, Kansas, has been forced to undertake grueling three-hour journeys to access specialized radiation therapy following a major seven-hour surgery.
The Night of the Theft
According to police reports, Bingham parked his car on a Kansas City street around 6 p.m. on February 7. He was staying overnight at the hospital on February 8 when he awoke to discover his vehicle had been stolen. The incident added immense stress to an already challenging situation, as the educator lacks comprehensive insurance coverage for such a loss.
Community Rallies in Support
A Meal Train fundraiser organized by Teesa Sneddeker highlighted the dual burden of mounting medical expenses and transportation needs. By Sunday afternoon, the campaign had raised over $10,800 to assist with Bingham's treatment and travel costs. His son, Spencer, expressed profound gratitude, stating that the community's support "fills my heart" and is "deeply appreciated."
A Beloved Educator
Bingham serves as a teacher at Fairfield Middle School and a track coach at a high school in Langdon. Students and colleagues describe him as an integral part of the school community. "He's really funny and very entertaining," said student Piper Schmidt, while Adellynd Katz called him "our favorite teacher here." Fellow teacher Kendra Nisly remarked, "He's just a wonderful person, and for him to be going through these struggles is really hard to see."
Medical Journey and Recovery
Bingham was diagnosed months ago with prostate cancer alongside an undetermined, aggressive skin cancer. He recently underwent a successful surgery to remove a tumor from his ear, as confirmed by Fairfield Public School Superintendent Richard Spender. Bingham is expected to undergo six weeks of radiation treatment, a regimen that necessitates reliable transportation.
In a heartfelt January post, Bingham thanked the community for meals, prayers, and financial gifts, stating, "I am truly blessed and grateful for you all." The Kansas City Missouri Police Department continues to investigate the theft of his vehicle, which remains missing.
