Six people were injured in an attack at Newton Community Hospital in Merseyside after a man was denied an appointment, police said. The suspect, a 20-year-old man from Newton-le-Willows originally from Afghanistan, allegedly used a metal bar during the incident on Tuesday.
Merseyside Police said officers were called shortly after midday following reports that a man had become 'increasingly agitated' when his request for an appointment was refused. He is believed to have damaged a counter before assaulting several people, including staff.
Six individuals required treatment at the hospital and walk-in centres for injuries including head lacerations, arm and hand injuries, and bruising. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of six counts of wounding, affray, and criminal damage, and later detained under Section 136 of the Mental Health Act.
The metal bar used in the attack has been recovered for forensic examination. A scene remains in place at the community hospital, with a mobile police station on site.
Superintendent Sarah Rotherham said: 'We understand that this incident would have caused concern for the local community and I hope the public feel reassured by the increased police presence.'
