Tesco Lasagne Taste Test: Cheapest vs Most Expensive, Clear Winner
Tesco Lasagne Taste Test: Cheapest vs Most Expensive Winner

Rich and indulgent, a proper lasagne should be laden with quality meat in a robust bolognese sauce, sandwiched between al dente pasta, bubbling with béchamel and crowned with cheese. Making it from scratch demands considerable effort, but supermarkets offer convenient ready-made alternatives. I visited my local Tesco to collect every own-brand lasagne available — both fresh and frozen — selecting the cheapest and priciest versions to compare directly. Raised in a home where everything was prepared from scratch, I am not usually a devotee of ready meals. However, one choice genuinely took me by surprise.

Tesco Finest Lasagne Al Forno — £4.50

Beginning with the most expensive entry, the Tesco Finest Lasagne Al Forno promises to deliver the "flavours of Italy." Of all contenders, my hopes were highest for this one — yet it proved the most underwhelming. While the addition of parmesan was a pleasant detail, the overall taste was undermined by an excessive quantity of herbs. The bolognese sauce was short on salt and possessed an overpowering smoky character that failed to win me over. Rating: 3/10.

Tesco Beef Lasagne (frozen) — £2

The most budget-friendly option, the frozen beef lasagne, ranked as the second-weakest overall. The parsley crumb and red cheddar cheese topping, together with the béchamel, left much to be desired. However, it did strike the right balance between cheese sauce and ragù. Rating: 4/10.

Hearty Food Co. Lasagne — £2.20

This chilled lasagne was the second most affordable in the lineup and the cheapest among fresh offerings. Expectations were modest, yet it proved a pleasant surprise. It surpassed both Finest-range options in taste; however, the pasta was overcooked, and the sauce carried a hint of insufficiently softened onions. Rating: 7/10.

Tesco Beef Lasagne (chilled) — £3.50

The Tesco standard-range beef lasagne shared second place overall. It featured a generous amount of herbs, and the pasta sheets had a superior texture. The sole criticism is that a little extra cheese would have taken it to the next level. Rating: 8/10.

Tesco Finest Beef Lasagne (frozen) — £3.50

Priced £1 lower than the chilled Tesco Finest lasagne, this frozen alternative delivered considerably more flavour – a genuine revelation given its place in the frozen aisle. The sauces were far better proportioned and less overwhelming. The inclusion of mozzarella balls on top was a particularly welcome addition. Rating: 8/10.

Tesco Vegetable Lasagne — £3.50

Remarkably, this lasagne stood out as the clear winner among all tested and is the sole option I would contemplate buying again. Despite containing no meat, it proved the undisputed top choice. Brimming with beautifully roasted vegetables, a mouth-watering sauce and a generous layer of cheese, its only drawback was a minor need for additional seasoning. It is worth noting that every ready meal put to the test could have done with a little extra salt. Rating: 9/10.
