Etiquette expert William Hanson has revealed a simple step that can secure free perks like room upgrades, champagne, or chocolates during a hotel stay: tick the 'special occasion' box when booking.
Speaking exclusively to Wales Online, Hanson explained that many hotels ask if guests are celebrating a special occasion, either during the booking process or upon arrival. He advised: 'When you book, and when it asks, "Are you booking for a special occasion?", just write yes.' He added that any stay qualifies, saying, 'It is a special occasion, as you're staying in a hotel.'
How to Maximise Your Hotel Benefits
Beyond ticking the box, Hanson recommends signing up for hotel loyalty schemes. He noted that many travellers overlook these programmes, leaving 'money on the table.' For example, Hotels.com Rewards offers £100 in Hotels.com cash after 10 eligible nights.
Behaviour also plays a crucial role. Hanson emphasised that first impressions matter: 'The service staff will have a first impression of the guests, from walking up to the front desk and within that minute, in terms of who they will upgrade or offer a welcome drink to.' He stressed that basic good manners are essential for unlocking personalised service.
Etiquette Tips for a Better Stay
Hanson created a 'grand etiquette hotel guide' with Hotels.com, outlining ten key behaviours:
- Engage staff with dignity: Treat every employee with respect to unlock personalised service.
- Keep hallways quiet: Move through corridors with restraint, especially at night.
- Drink in moderation: Avoid public displays of intoxication.
- No smoking indoors: It undermines the experience for future guests and incurs penalties.
- Tidy your room: Keep it orderly so housekeeping can work efficiently.
- Use the kettle only for hot drinks: Repurposing it for laundry is unacceptable.
- Know what you can take: Slippers and toiletries are fine; larger items are not.
- Queue at breakfast: The buffet is a civilised ritual, not a free-for-all.
- Avoid reserving loungers with towels: Presence, not textiles, secures a spot.
- Use loyalty programmes: Consolidate bookings to accumulate rewards.
Hanson concluded: 'At the heart of my guide is the idea that small, thoughtful behaviours add up to big rewards: from a better night’s sleep and improved service to savings on future trips.'
