The Duchess of Kent, who famously preferred to be known simply as Katharine Kent, has spoken openly about her battle with depression after years of retreat from the royal spotlight. In a rare admission, she revealed the emotional turmoil she faced, including the pain of baby loss and a stillbirth, which contributed to her mental health struggles.
Despite her public profile as a style icon and charity worker, the duchess admitted she was naturally shy and never truly gained confidence. 'It is one of the reasons I am always trying to boost other people’s self-esteem, because I know what it’s like not to have it,' she once said, highlighting her empathy for others.
After stepping away from royal duties amid health problems, she was granted the Queen’s permission to drop her HRH style. She embraced a low-key existence, teaching music in a primary school in Hull for 13 years and volunteering for the Samaritans, finding solace in helping others.
The duchess, the first royal family member in over 300 years to convert to Catholicism, now prefers the informality of everyday life, being known simply as Kate or Mrs Kent. Her brave confession sheds light on the hidden struggles behind the royal facade.
