The charity Independent Age is issuing an urgent call to older people across the UK, particularly those managing long-term health conditions, to ensure they are not missing out on vital financial support. It highlights that millions may be eligible for benefits worth a combined total of up to £10,040 in the 2025/26 financial year.
New Online Guide to Unlocking Support
To help people navigate the system, Independent Age has launched a comprehensive new online guide. This resource is designed to assist those reaching State Pension age and individuals already in later life with claiming benefits, securing Council Tax discounts, and accessing help for daily care needs.
"Whether you've just been diagnosed or have been managing your condition for some time, life can have its challenges when you have a long-term health condition," said a spokesperson for the charity. "But with a few simple steps and the right support, you can take control, manage your condition and live well."
The full guide is available to view, download, or order as a free copy from the charity. An audio version is also accessible online for those who prefer it.
Key Benefits You Might Be Missing
Independent Age stresses that two primary benefits are frequently underclaimed. The first is Attendance Allowance, a tax-free payment not affected by income or savings. It provides extra money to help with the additional costs of a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability for those over State Pension age.
Currently, it helps nearly 1.7 million older people in Great Britain. Recipients get either £73.90 (lower rate) or £110.40 (higher rate) each week, paid every four weeks. This amounts to up to £441.60 per payment period.
The second is Pension Credit, a means-tested benefit that tops up the income of people over State Pension age on a low income. It currently supports 1.4 million people, boosting weekly income to a guaranteed minimum. On average, it is worth £4,300 this year.
Critically, the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) estimates that 760,000 eligible people are not claiming Pension Credit. Furthermore, over one million pensioners are believed to be missing out on Attendance Allowance.
How to Claim and Get Further Help
For those struggling with everyday tasks, Independent Age recommends requesting a care needs assessment from your local authority. This can help secure practical support like meals on wheels or a care worker.
To check benefit eligibility, the charity advises using the free, confidential online benefits calculator on the GOV.UK website. For Pension Credit specifically, you can use the dedicated calculator or call the helpline on 0800 99 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm).
Expert assistance with claims is also available from organisations like Citizens Advice, Age UK, and Independent Age itself. Claiming Attendance Allowance involves a detailed form, but these organisations can provide guidance to complete it.
Securing these benefits can be a gateway to further assistance, including help with housing costs, Council Tax, heating bills through the Warm Home Discount Scheme, and a free TV licence for those aged 75 and over.
