The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that nearly 78 per cent of new Pension Credit claims are processed within 50 working days. This means older people on a low income submitting a claim now could receive their first payment and arrears by mid-July.
Pension Credit is the most under-claimed benefit, yet it can deliver over £4,300 in additional support over the coming year. Nearly 1.4 million older people across Great Britain currently receive it, but many more are eligible and not claiming.
To qualify for Guarantee Pension Credit, you must be State Pension age and have a weekly income below £238.00 for a single person or £363.25 for a couple. These thresholds may be higher if you are disabled, a carer, or have certain housing costs. Savings and capital over £10,000 are assumed to generate income.
Claims can be backdated by up to three months, and receiving even £1 per week can unlock additional support such as help with housing costs, heating bills, and Council Tax. The online Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK can provide an estimate of potential payments.
To apply, call the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm) or use the online service. Mixed-age couples where one partner has not reached State Pension age cannot claim Pension Credit until both have reached that age.
