Arthur Aspinall, recognised as England's oldest man, has died peacefully at his home in Bolton at the age of 109 years and 231 days. Born on 13 October 1916, he lived through the reigns of four British monarchs and the terms of 24 prime ministers.
Mr Aspinall was the last surviving British man born in 1916 and was the second-oldest man in the United Kingdom, behind Scotland's Hugh Kerr. He passed away on 1 June, according to LongeviQuest, which validated his age in February 2026.
Born to Fred and Lily Aspinall, he grew up in a lower middle-class family in Bolton. His father ran a forging business manufacturing bolts and fasteners, and Arthur joined the firm at age 14, learning every aspect of operations. He was promoted to foreman by 16 and dedicated his working life to the family company, retiring only in 2006 at the age of 90.
In 1944, he married Constance Nellie Cheadle, and they had two children, Heather (born 1945) and Marcus (born 1952). Constance died in November 1963 at age 45. Heather predeceased her father, passing away on 12 October 2025 at 79. Arthur is survived by his son Marcus, eight grandchildren, and further descendants.
His grandson David Aspinall, co-founder of design company Chase and Wonder, shared warm tributes highlighting his grandfather's formative influence.
