Little Orlá Mckinnon, described by her mother as a "typical, bubbly little girl," began experiencing what appeared to be routine cold symptoms. Within days, her condition deteriorated alarmingly, leading to a medical emergency that would change her life forever.

"It started with just a cough and a runny nose," recalls her mother, Nicola. "We never imagined it would lead to this." When Orlá began struggling to walk and complained of back pain, her parents knew something was seriously wrong.
Rushed to hospital, the toddler underwent a series of tests that revealed the shocking diagnosis: transverse myelitis. This rare neurological condition occurs when inflammation damages the spinal cord, disrupting communication between the nerves and the rest of the body.

"Seeing your child go from running around to being unable to move is every parent's worst nightmare," Nicola shares, her voice filled with emotion. "She can't feed herself, she can't play like other children - she's completely dependent on us for everything."

Transverse myelitis affects approximately 300 people in the UK each year, with children representing only a small percentage of cases. The condition can be triggered by viral infections, though why it affects some individuals and not others remains largely unknown to medical science.
