A woman from Arizona has spoken out after facing criticism for starting a new relationship while her husband, who suffered a catastrophic brain injury, lives in a care home. Amanda Robinson, 39, insists she is not breaking her wedding vows, stating, 'I don't have a marriage anymore.'
Amanda and her husband Matt, 42, were childhood sweethearts who married in 2005 and had two sons. Their lives changed in February 2021 when Matt's truck was hit by another vehicle, leaving him with a severe brain injury that affects his vision, personality, memory, and behaviour. Amanda, a nurse, cared for him alone for four years before making the difficult decision to place him in a nearby care home.
In 2023, Amanda met Josh, a 38-year-old country singer, at a local bar. She told him about Matt's condition, and Josh soon began accompanying her on visits to the care home, forming a bond with Matt. 'I did this all by myself for years, and now I have somebody else right there with me,' Amanda said. She added, 'I know that if Matt was aware of what was going on, he wouldn't want me to be his caregiver forever, he'd want me to be happy.'
Matt's injuries were so severe that doctors initially told the family to say their goodbyes. He spent 10 months in hospital and returned home in December 2021 able to walk and talk, but his condition deteriorated. He now hallucinates and has lost his memory and vision. 'The hardest part is having to explain to him where he is and what's going on,' Amanda said. Despite the challenges, she feels supported by Josh, who has embraced the unconventional family dynamic.
