Billie Eilish has candidly spoken about the exhausting reality of living with Tourette's syndrome, a neurological condition she was diagnosed with at age 11. The singer described her frustration over the public's limited understanding of the disorder, which causes involuntary movements and vocalisations known as tics.
Understanding Her Tics
Eilish explained that her vocal tics are mostly quiet noises, though she occasionally experiences word tics. She detailed the constant effort required to suppress these tics, particularly during interviews and public appearances. “I’m constantly suppressing tics,” she said, noting that while she may appear tic-free on camera, she is actively controlling visible tics from her head to her waist. Her knees and arms often tic out of sight, and she must release the suppressed tics once she is no longer in the public eye.
The Daily Challenge
The singer emphasised the daily struggle faced by individuals with Tourette's, who spend much of their time suppressing tics. She expressed her frustration at the public's lack of comprehension regarding this reality. “People think you don’t have it if you’re not ticcing in front of them,” she remarked, highlighting the misconception that tics are always visible.
Eilish’s openness about her condition aims to raise awareness and foster greater understanding of Tourette's syndrome. Her comments shed light on the hidden challenges of living with a neurological disorder that is often misunderstood by the general public.
