For the bulk of her weekly grocery shop, Sophie Harris typically chooses Sainsbury's or Tesco for their practicality and broad product selection. However, she makes a deliberate exception for one item: strawberries and blueberries, which she exclusively purchases from M&S.
Harris notes that while she would happily do all her food shopping at M&S if feasible, certain items are not worth the extra cost. But for berries, the premium retailer is her only choice due to superior freshness and flavour. She recalls a punnet of M&S blueberries that lasted a full 10 days, far outlasting berries from other supermarkets.
Price Comparison and Waste Reduction
The price difference is marginal: a 250g punnet of strawberries costs £2.25 at Sainsbury's versus £2.60 at M&S. Despite the slightly higher cost, Harris finds she wastes far fewer strawberries, making the extra expense worthwhile. She also prefers M&S's entire fruit range, including kiwis, bananas, apples, and oranges, especially during summer.
Extended Range of Healthier Options
M&S has recently expanded its line of simple ingredients, transforming everyday foods into healthier alternatives. The packaging clearly displays each product's contents. Harris tested several items, including avocado oil crisps (£3.90), sausages, meatballs, and bread, all of which she found thoroughly enjoyable. The condiments impressed her with their fresh taste, and she plans to return for the baked beans.
According to Harris, the key advantage of M&S berries is their longevity and taste. While storage tips can help keep strawberries fresh, buying from M&S ensures they maintain freshness considerably better from the start.
