Britons are being urged to brace themselves for a potential surge in wasp activity this summer, with pest control experts warning of ideal conditions for population growth. The British Pest Control Association (BPCA) has issued a stark alert that the UK could be facing a significant increase in wasp numbers, turning gardens and pub beer gardens into potential hotspots.
Why the Sudden Surge?
According to the BPCA, the combination of a mild winter and a warm, early spring has created the perfect storm for wasp colonies to thrive. These conditions have allowed queen wasps to establish nests successfully, leading to a larger than usual worker population as we head into the peak summer months.
The Dangers of DIY Removal
Natalie Bungay, Technical Manager at BPCA, strongly advises against the do-it-yourself approach to nest removal. 'Attempting to deal with a wasp nest yourself is not just ineffective; it's genuinely dangerous,' she warns. 'A provoked wasp swarm can become highly aggressive, and their stings pose a real risk, especially to those with allergies.'
Professional Intervention is Key
BPCA recommends seeking professional help for any nest discovered on your property. Professional pest controllers are trained, equipped, and insured to handle nests safely and effectively, ensuring the problem is resolved without putting households at risk.
Staying Safe During Wasp Season
- Avoid disturbing active wasp nests.
- Keep food and sweet drinks covered when eating outdoors.
- Ensure bins have tightly sealed lids.
- Remain calm and move slowly if a wasp is near you; sudden movements can provoke them.
With the right precautions and professional support, the public can enjoy the summer while minimising unwelcome encounters with these stinging insects.
