Urgent Warning for Pet Owners: Toxic Blue-Green Algae Poses Deadly Risk to Dogs
Toxic algae warning for UK dog owners

Veterinary experts have issued an urgent warning to dog owners across the UK as toxic blue-green algae reaches dangerous levels in lakes, ponds, and rivers. The naturally occurring bacteria can prove fatal to pets within hours of exposure.

What is Blue-Green Algae?

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) forms thick scum-like layers on water surfaces during warm weather. While some varieties are harmless, toxic strains produce dangerous neurotoxins and liver toxins that attack a dog's nervous system.

Deadly Symptoms to Watch For

Pet owners should be alert for these signs of poisoning:

  • Vomiting and diarrhoea (sometimes bloody)
  • Excessive drooling
  • Trouble breathing
  • Seizures or tremors
  • Disorientation
  • Collapse

Symptoms can appear within 15 minutes to several hours after exposure. Without immediate veterinary treatment, the toxins can cause liver failure and death.

How to Protect Your Dog

Vets recommend these precautions:

  1. Avoid letting dogs swim in or drink from stagnant water
  2. Keep pets on leads near affected water bodies
  3. Rinse dogs immediately if contact occurs
  4. Learn to identify algae blooms (often blue-green, but sometimes red or brown)

The British Veterinary Association notes that cases peak between May and October when warmer temperatures accelerate algae growth. Several dog deaths have already been reported this season.

What to Do in an Emergency

If you suspect algae poisoning:

  • Prevent further exposure
  • Don't induce vomiting
  • Call your vet immediately - every minute counts
  • Note the water source for authorities

Environment Agency testing has confirmed toxic algae at multiple sites nationwide. Local councils are posting warning signs at affected locations.
