Wandsworth Council has submitted plans to upgrade Furzedown Recreation Ground in Tooting, with proposals including a redesigned skatepark, new play equipment, and improved accessibility.
Park transformation plans
The proposals involve redesigning the park's playground and skatepark, adding inclusive equipment and seating, and redeveloping the former bowling green. Fences would be removed, and planting and pathways adjusted to improve connections across the park.
The area around the pavilion would be transformed into a more welcoming space to support potential future redevelopment with a new café and toilets, although these facilities are not part of the current application.
Design goals
Planning documents state the scheme aims to make the park “an accessible, resilient and attractive local park that supports play, informal recreation, social connection and everyday enjoyment”.
The documents add: “The design aims to improve movement across the site, strengthen visual connections, create more comfortable and inclusive places to sit and meet, provide renewed play and activity opportunities, and introduce a softer landscape character through tree planting, biodiversity enhancements and more naturalistic forms.”
The council previously allocated £685,000 to improve the park, though the exact cost of the current application's works has not been published. A decision on the plans will be made in due course.
