Natural vinegar spray keeps flies and ants at bay all summer, say pest experts

As spring brings warmer weather, flies and ants are increasingly making their way into homes across the UK. Pest control experts say a simple solution of white vinegar and water can be an effective natural repellent, eliminating the need for chemical sprays.

According to Pale Horse Pest Control, a mixture of equal parts white vinegar and water sprayed around windows, doorways, and other entry points can deter both insects. These pests rely heavily on their sense of smell to find food, and the pungent aroma of vinegar irritates them, making them seek easier sources elsewhere.

Ants are particularly problematic because they leave pheromone trails for others to follow, making eradication difficult once they settle in. Vinegar disrupts these trails. For flies, which often enter homes to lay eggs in damp areas like drains, vinegar masks the scent of potential breeding sites.

The experts also recommend using essential oils such as neem, lemon, eucalyptus, or mint oil, which have strong scents that pests dislike. Additionally, coffee grounds and cinnamon can interfere with ant trails, while basil, mint, and lavender can repel flies—either as essential oils or potted plants near windows.

To maximise effectiveness, the article advises keeping homes clean: clear crumbs, empty bins daily, clean drains, and store food in sealed containers. This reduces the attraction for insects, making natural repellents more successful in keeping homes pest-free during the warmer months.
