As spring temperatures rise, gardeners are noticing an influx of weeds such as dandelions, chickweed, and bindweed. One writer put Monty Don's simple four-word advice to the test and achieved remarkable results.
Monty Don, host of Gardeners' World, recommends tackling weeds manually in small sections. His key advice: 'Do one metre properly.' He argues that focusing on a compact area is far better than doing 10 metres half-heartedly.
The writer selected a metre of border soil, used a hand fork to loosen the earth, and removed each weed individually, ensuring the entire root system came out. This prevented rapid regeneration from leftover root fragments.
The result was a bed that stayed weed-free without requiring lengthy maintenance. The method proved more effective than alternatives like white vinegar, which fails to address root systems of established weeds.
