Four Low-Maintenance Dog Breeds Ideal for Busy Owners and Small Spaces

Choosing the right dog breed involves considering factors such as appearance, temperament, grooming needs, and energy levels. Axel Lagercrantz, CEO of Pets4Homes, Britain's largest pet platform, has identified four breeds that are particularly low-maintenance for prospective owners.

According to Lagercrantz, low-maintenance dogs typically have short coats that shed minimally, reducing time spent on grooming and cleaning. They also possess relaxed personalities and moderate energy levels, requiring less daily exercise. The breeds highlighted include the French Bulldog, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Dachshund, and Greyhound.

French Bulldogs and Cavaliers are highly adaptable to apartment living and thrive on short walks and cuddle time. Dachshunds are small, sturdy, and require minimal grooming. Greyhounds, despite their athletic appearance, are surprisingly laid-back, enjoying short bursts of activity followed by long naps. Their independent nature allows them to be comfortable alone for periods.

Lagercrantz emphasised that all dogs have fundamental needs, including a balanced diet suited to their size and activity level, daily walks, play sessions, and routine veterinary care. Mental stimulation can be provided through puzzle toys or basic training. A comfortable sleeping area and ample love and attention are also essential for their wellbeing.

He advised prospective owners to choose a dog that fits their lifestyle, particularly if they are busy or live in a small space. Sticking to a routine for feeding, walks, and playtime helps dogs feel secure, and paying attention to their body language aids in understanding their needs.
