As temperatures rise and the sun becomes more radiant, many people are eager to prepare their gardens for spring. After winter, outdoor spaces can look battered, with grimy patios, weeds, and dead flowers. The ideal time to start planting is after the final frost, but proper planning is key to maximising the space.
Gardenary, a TikTok account for beginner gardeners, has shared a quick trick to plan a garden in just one minute. The expert advises starting with the border: plant herbs and flowers all along the edge of raised beds. These will repel pests, attract beneficial insects, and provide year-round beauty.
Next, focus on the biggest plants, which are fruiting plants. In spring, sugar snap peas are ideal; in summer, tomatoes and cucumbers. These should be grown up a trellis in the middle of the bed. Then, plant root crops like radishes alongside the fruiting crops.
After that, plant leafy greens just inside the border, starting from seed or adding small starts for an early harvest. The expert notes a spot many miss: right behind the herbs, before the leafy greens, add a biennial such as kale, Swiss chard, or parsley. Finally, include smelly plants like garlic, onions, or chives for extra pest protection.
