Pouring Coca-Cola on taps can dissolve limescale and soap scum, leaving fixtures gleaming, according to cleaning specialists at Homeglow. The fizzy drink contains acids that break down mineral deposits without discolouring or peeling metallic surfaces.
Why Coca-Cola works on tap stains
Most people give taps a cursory wipe when cleaning the bathroom, but over time they can become dotted with soap and limescale that forms a hardened layer on the metal. Tap stains are stubborn to remove because limescale is composed of minerals that solidify over time and cannot be tackled with most water-based household cleaning products.
Soap can also react with limescale to produce a substance known as soap scum, which adheres to surfaces and creates a greasy residue that is difficult to scrub away without scratching taps. The cleaning specialists at Homeglow have revealed that Coca-Cola is one of the most efficient ways to break down these hardened stains.
How to clean taps with Coca-Cola
To use this method, fill a plastic bag with Coca-Cola and place it firmly over a tap fixture. Fasten the bag with rubber bands, then leave the taps undisturbed for at least one hour. The acids in Coca-Cola require time to break down and dissolve the stains, so particularly stubborn marks can be left for longer.
Once the time has elapsed, remove the plastic bag and use a toothbrush to gently scrub at the stains. All greasy and hardened stains should disintegrate with ease. Rinse with warm water, dry the taps with a clean cloth, and the taps should be thoroughly spotless.
