A refuse worker has issued a crucial warning to households across the country, urging them to stop placing one common item into food waste or recycling bins. The item in question is chewing gum, a popular product that many people mistakenly believe can be disposed of in environmentally friendly ways.

Why Chewing Gum Belongs in General Waste
Speaking directly to the camera, Ashley explained that chewing gum should always be placed in the general waste bin once finished. He emphasised that it is not biodegradable, meaning it cannot break down naturally in soil or compost. "It goes in your general waste because it can't break down and go into the soil or whatever they make the food waste into," Ashley stated, highlighting the importance of proper disposal to maintain the integrity of recycling and composting systems.

"Because of the combination, it doesn't go in either the recycling bin. It would have to go in your general waste bin," he clarified, urging people to check their local council guidelines for confirmation.
