How baking soda works
Baking soda, or bicarbonate of soda, is an alkaline substance that raises the pH level on surfaces, making it impossible for moss and algae to thrive in an acidic environment. It also absorbs moisture, drying out the growth so it cannot survive. Experts call it a “very powerful substance that will get rid of the moss in no time.”
Step-by-step method
On a dry, bright day, brush the patio to dislodge dirt. Then liberally scatter dry baking soda over the affected areas. Leave it undisturbed for 24 to 48 hours, allowing it to dehydrate the moss or algae. Additional applications can be made during this time. When the growth turns brown, it is dying. Once completely dry, sweep it away with a broom and rinse the patio with hot water. The surface should remain clean and stain-free for longer.
