A 2025 BioScience report warns that the world is 'hurtling toward climate chaos', with deforestation, biodiversity loss and plastic pollution accelerating. In response, many consumers want to shop sustainably, but identifying genuinely eco-friendly brands can be challenging. One certification that helps is 1% for the Planet, founded in 2002 by Patagonia's Yvon Chouinard and Craig Mathews. The scheme requires businesses to donate one per cent of their annual sales (not profits) to vetted non-profit organisations, ensuring consistent and impactful contributions. Since its launch, over 4,000 businesses have been certified, channelling hundreds of millions of pounds to causes such as wildlife conservation, renewable energy and sustainable food systems.
Among the certified brands is Fill, a refillable household essentials company based in Northamptonshire. It makes products like laundry detergent and shampoo, which are cruelty-free, vegan and Ecocert-certified. Most of Fill's donations go to The Wildlife Trust for Beds, Cambs & Northants, a natural conservation charity.
Rave, an independent coffee roastery in Cirencester, offers speciality coffee bags, canned iced coffee and coffee liqueur. Its 1% for the Planet donations support Project Waterfall, which provides clean water and education to coffee-growing communities, and Fauna & Flora International. Additionally, one per cent of sales from its tusk African blend supports Tusk's wildlife conservation work in Africa.
Microscooter, a kids' scooter brand, repurposes ocean waste such as fishing nets for its eco scooter range. It donates one per cent of sales from this range to Parley for the Oceans, which tackles plastic pollution and climate change, and Right to Play, which helps children through sports and education.
Patagonia, co-founded by Yvon Chouinard, offers dependable outdoor clothing made from responsible materials like organic wool and recycled fishing nets. The brand has been a 1% for the Planet member since the scheme's inception. Klean Kanteen, a reusable food and drinkware brand, has been a member since 2008 and is also B-Corp certified and climate neutral. Its insulated TKPro flask is highly rated for keeping drinks hot or cold for days.
Luxury French skincare brand Caudalie has been a 1% for the Planet member since 2012. The certification helps consumers identify brands that are striving to do better, and the full list of members can be found in the 1% for the Planet Directory.
